about
About shrug.host
Managed hosting for small organizations, run by the person who operates your infrastructure. Small on purpose.
Built differently, on purpose.
Human-Scale Support
Direct support from someone who knows your setup. No ticket systems, no call centers — when you email, the person who runs your infrastructure reads it and responds.
Who We Serve
- Small nonprofits and community organizations
- Small businesses wanting expert-managed hosting
- Creative and open source projects needing reliable infrastructure
- Professional services with regulatory or contractual requirements
A Limited Roster
We take on a limited number of hosting customers at a time, so every one gets real attention. Most people find us through a referral, but that's not a requirement.
Technical Foundation
- Modern Linux systems with automatic security updates
- Storage and networking designed for resilience, appropriate to the workload
- Daily automated backups with 30-day retention
- Service and infrastructure monitoring with alerting
- SSL certificates automatically managed and renewed
We're based in Boston, but we run infrastructure wherever clients need it — including EU-only deployments for organizations with data residency requirements.
Who Runs It
Shrug.host is operated by Neil Hanlon, an infrastructure engineer in Bedford, MA, with over a decade running production systems.
He co-founded the Rocky Enterprise Software Foundation and led its infrastructure team; today he's the PTL for RDO, sits on OpenELA's Technical Steering Committee, maintains packages for Fedora and EPEL, and reviews for OpenStack-Ansible.
